China L Visa (Tourist Visa): Requirements & Application Guide

Planning a trip to China? Understanding the visa requirements is essential for a hassle-free journey. The China Tourist Visa (L Visa) is the most common type of visa for travelers visiting the country for sightseeing, cultural experiences, and leisure. This guide will walk you through the application process, required documents, costs, and important details to ensure a smooth entry into China.

China Fully Reopening For Tourists! Here's How To Apply For Your Visa

Who Needs a China L Visa?

A China L Visa is required for most foreigners traveling to China for tourism, unless they qualify for a visa-free entry policy (such as the 240-hour transit visa exemption). If you are not eligible for any of China’s visa-free policies, you must apply for a tourist visa before entering the country.

China Tourist Visa Requirements

To obtain a China L Visa, you need to submit the following documents:

  1. Valid Passport

    • A signed passport with at least six months of validity remaining and two blank visa pages.

    • A photocopy of the passport's data page and, if applicable, the photo page.

  2. Completed Visa Application Form

    • The form can be downloaded from the Chinese embassy website.

    • Must be completed on a computer, printed, and signed.

  3. Recent Passport-Style Photograph

    • A recent color photo (bareheaded, full-face) against a light background.

    • Size: 48mm x 33mm.

  4. Proof of Legal Entry or Residence Status (If applying outside your home country)

    • If applying from a country other than your nationality, you must provide proof of legal stay, residence, work, or study.

  5. Original Chinese Passport or Previous China Visa (If applicable)

    • Former Chinese citizens who have obtained foreign nationality must provide their original Chinese passport and a copy of the information page.

    • If previously issued a China visa, a copy of the visa from your old passport must be provided.

    • If your new passport has a different name, an official document proving the name change is required.

  6. Supporting Travel Documents

    • Independent travelers must provide proof of round-trip flight tickets and hotel reservations.

    • Tour group travelers need an invitation letter from a registered Chinese travel agency. The letter should include:

      • Traveler’s full name, gender, and date of birth.

      • Planned itinerary, including arrival and departure dates and tourist destinations.

      • Contact details of the inviting entity, including official seal or inviter’s signature.

How to Apply for a China L Visa

  1. Prepare Required Documents – Gather all necessary paperwork as outlined above.

  2. Submit Your Application – Visit the nearest Chinese embassy, consulate, or a China Visa Application Service Center (CVASC). Some locations require online appointments via the China Online Visa Application (COVA) system.

  3. Pay Visa Fees – Fees vary by nationality and type of visa. Upon payment, you will receive a pick-up slip.

  4. Collect Your Visa – If approved, pick up your passport and visa on the assigned date (usually within a week). You can collect it in person or authorize someone to do so.
